Because of time and evolution. A long time ago everyone use to be the same color. Mutations in our genes over time started to change the color. More of an advantage to have lighter skin far from the equator because lack of vitamin D in sunlight. Today it doesn't matter because of nutrition.

why? because we as a people (homosapien's) evolved from asia, one of three idea's, or is it from the cradle of africa when continents weren't broken up and the land mass was much larger, but as the lands divided and groups a,b,c,d divided up and moved on, while some remianed static, the last known of the homosapien's ventured further north-east to the northern lights (caucasian's). each group settled down into they're own patterns and adapted according and i repeat adapted as each to they're own while climatic diffrences are to this day different they were back then. collectively we're an extrodinary adaptive species as we changed according to the environment to 'survive'. so there you have it, eskimos aside, it looks a no brainer!

If you live in cold climate you need less protection from the sun, therefore produce less melanin, hence less layer of skin and you look lighter. If you live in the hot climate then your body produces extra Melanin to protect you from the harmfull radiation hence the colour differences.

If we didn't have people (no 's') of different colours (spelt with a 'u') so we all look the same, we wouldn't know who to insult with racist taunts, would we?
