There are two types of springs for garage doors.
One kind sites above the door, fastened to the wall and winds up like a coil.
The other kind has one spring on each side that stretch out the long way to pull the door up from about the middle of the garage where they are fastened to the rails the door runs on.
Either kind can be dangerous if you don't handle them correctly .
If you don't have an instruction manual go to a lumber yard and ask to copy instructions from an opener that has the same springs as the one you intend to work on. You might also be able to get that information at the local library. Ask around, some of the people you know may have some experience and they can help you with it, otherwise hire someone who does that sort of thing or you could get hurt.

Installing a garage door spring can be dangerous. Judging from the way I have seen so-called professionals anchor the spring, lots of professionals shouldn't be doing it either.
Assuming you are talking about a multiple panel door and springs which are mounted almost parallel to the horizontal track, I have to tell you that there are lots of little tricks that you don't get the first time doing it. Since the danger of a garage door failing is serious and may hurt someone seriously, I suggest you leave this to the experts.
Lastly, remember that it doesn't have to work right after you finish it, but also in a year or two. It might be nice to have someone who would come back and fix minor problems which sometimes appear.

Garage door is pretty easy, the Second time. lol - You can do it, there is not much danger or difficulty with the Springs- the danger is if you get one with a Torsion Bar. You can do that too- but make dam sure you have good tools that will not slip out the holes for Cranking up the Spring and holding back- many men have a hole in the head from that. ha ha
Make sure you have some power nut drivers, and good comprehension of Directions, there are thousands of Parts- Take a close look at a door already up, so you can get a good mental picture in your mind. Note the Difference in the Hinges.

Nope. I installed all four on my garage myself. No help, never did it before, and they all work great. Just follow the directions, be safe, and make sure you have a six pack. Just FYI, the first one took about an hour and 15 minutes, the other 3, I slammed in about 25 minutes each. All had the "dangerous" torsion bars.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/79slO
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Maybe you need the type of garage door that operates on rails, like mine. It is much easier to install.
Our former house had the spring style, and we were told not to adjust the spring ourself, that it requires expert experience.

It depends on your skill level. If you're unsure, by all means hire a "pro" to do the job. It may cost more, but you'll know the door will open and close without binding, etc. Good luck.

You can get hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Ask a neighbor. Maybe they have done it and can help. Doesnt cost that much to let a pro do it. m
