It would cause the religions to come tumbling down and panic in the streets, so i would say the govt. would try to keep it from the public and, if possible, seek military use of that knowledge....

No, I think the government would keep that to there selves, I heard on a show about SETI a number of years ago that they did receive a signal of unknown origin, but shortly after that is when the government cut all funding to SETI, and they have relied on private donations since then.

First SETI isnt all that it seems,
Second As of today we havent even logged in or identified half the viruses and bacterias around us, let alone the Marine life and the terrestial life in full. We havent even discovered much about the earth yet,
SETI is looking for extra terrstial life based on the blue print of the elments that make up life on earth. The chances of finding them according to SETI are one in 46 trilllion.
On the earth we have many other unconventional life forms. And we know about them, Science as we see it has neither any instrument nor the resources to look into life forms on eart itself

Many of them do,yes. Your mistake was speaking to the person. If you refuse to get into a conversation.Say hello if introduced. If the person asks directly either smile and walk away or say you make it a point not to discuss religion or politics. If necessary find the host/ess and ask them to speak to the annoy er. I don't tolerate preachy people very well. This is the fiftieth year I've been an atheist.I was an atheist before I knew the word. Please, take my word on this:the less contact with "preachys" the more clarity there is to life.Reality is a truly wonderful place to live.

When I was younger, I believed the government will tell us, however, if they have problems admitting a lie like WMD, greenhouse emissions causing severe climatic changes, why would they admit to ET life?
