In winter season, some of the animals and insects are less active. They will not have food for their energy. They utilise their already stored energy as fat from their body. This is one kind of ADAPTATION of living creature to tide over the problems due to winter (low temperature). This is also called as winter-deep-sleep!

Hibernation is a state of metabolic depression characterized by low body temperature and low metabolic rate. Hibernation may last several days or weeks depending on ambient temperature, species, and time of year. Typically, the winter season for the hibernator is characterized by periods of hibernation interrupted by periodic euthermic arousals wherein body temperature is restored to typical values. It is presumed that the function of hibernation is to allow animals to conserve energy during the winter. During hibernation animals slow their metabolism to a very low level, with body temperature and breathing rates lowered, gradually using up the body fat reserves stored during the warmer months.

It is a hypo-metabolic state of the certain animals that cannot cope with the decrease in environmental temperature. In the state called winter sleep or hibernation, their vital activities are diminished such that they barely survive on what energy source has been stored earlier. They don't eat, and move and lie quiet.
