Well, I am English and I know a lot of people that are of English descent. Neither I, or anyone I know look down on people that aren't English. What I have noticed is that people in the groups once considered to be minorities can be hypersensitive to others reactions toward them and may misread them as negative when they are actually neutral or would be the same toward any other person of any nation or color.

As far as the language issue, The language of a nation is something to be proud of. I wouldn't dare move to Mexico or Germany and have the audacity not to learn and practice the native language. That would be disrespectful to assume that someone should try to understand me when I am in their country. It's reasonable to expect some frustration at first because accents can make it difficult to communicate the correct pronunciation and word. If you keep that in mind, it's easier to understand other people's points of view. It's not that they are looking down on you, but more that it's hard to understand sometimes.

I finally got to go to England last New Year's and I found that the English were so nice I could hardly stand it. They were so friendly and warm that I couldn't help but smile widely.
I do think that people should have standards of conduct, ethics, and culture and I have a feeling that the English don't apologize for having opinions about such things. That they are not running themselves ragged to please everyone like many in America does not make them snobs or even mean that they think meanly of others, just that they have an opinion to apply to themselves. I did not get to witness this much during my short stay, but I've had a suspicion that this was the case for a long time.

I agree with Insomniak, too.
