From what you described it looks like a slug caterpillar. The spines on the body can cause irritation and swelling on skin sometimes rash if you are allergic.
Stay way !!! not all caterpillars are friendly.

Thats not a true caterpillar. We had those too and they are not good for the trees. I don't recall what they are called though, sorry.

That is not a stinger and yes, they are toxic to animals. I am sorry to hear about your kitty. :(
You need to get rid of them because they are dangerous to cats, but not to humans. They are called tomato worms and they are destructive to trees and other plants.
