It depends, if both you and the stranger are fairly equal, and you knew absolutely that there was no way to save that person without sacrificing yourself, you would save your own life, that's survival. On the other hand, if this stranger was a child with a whole life ahead of them and with the potential to change mankind for the good, and you had lived most of your life, then I would save the child.

That's something that no one can know until they are actually faced with the choice. Even those who answer right away that they'd save their own life may find themselves in a split second doing what they never expected. By the same token someone who is sure that they would save the stranger could find themselves caving in with fear at the moment of truth. People sacrificing their own lives for others is not a rare thing but it would be rare for a course of action to be planned. I'm thinking of different situations and combat comes to mind. On Iwo Jima in WWII there were a fairly high number of marines that received the medal of honor because they fell on grenades to save the lives of others. I don't imagine any of them ever thought they would do something like that, but in a flash they made a decision. Also some action may happen that takes the choice out of your hands. A child has fallen in a river and by instinct you jump in to save him/her...you might save the child but die in the process. You never intended to die...you just tried to save the life of another without losing your own. So to answer your question, I don't know.

How come the stranger qualifies for 'innocent' whereas I dont. Well, I am not that stupid and I would try to bail out alongwith the stranger.

i would save a child.
other than that, they are on their own. if they're much older, they've had a life and lived it, if they are my age (mid 20's) then i doubt they have 5 kids at home. I do.

My own. Although that would be a tough choice if someone was in immenent danger, I would have to think about my kids, my husband, and keeping myself alive for them.
