One reason is because Jesus is a threat to their life style. If they accept Christ as their personal Savior, they will be convicted of the things they are doing and frankly, they don't want to change.
Another reason is that there are lots of phony Christians who have giving the whole concept of Christianity a bad name. You never know if the person you say this to has been burned, has heard something awful about Christians, or has other knowledge that makes them react strongly.
Your role is not to react to their anger or rejection, but just keep telling the Good News. We are Christ's ambassadors and God has left clear instructions that he has left this duty to us. You are doing great. Keep the faith! Good job.

Before we have a complete understanding of the universe, every assumption that people make are subjective. There is no right or wrong. I am not religious, and I cannot say that religions are wrong, nor can I say that science is absolutely right. Sorry to say this against your belief but, God may be real, and Jesus is not the only truth. From a non-religious person's perspective, what strike me is that some people (yes, some, so I am not generalizing) will get upset when non-religious people like me start to question their beliefs, because they cannot justify their belief and resort to quick answers like "it just is" or "God made it so". I don't have a problem with people teaching other about religion, most of the time they are good things in the spiritual sense. But if they can't show convincing evidence, then human knowledge is not going to progress. And putting everything on the shoulders of a divine being doesn't help us gain further understanding of the world around us.

I agree with “jim w” and do not think he meant it offensively. I don’t think it is right that people assume you believe what they do.
Would you feel offended if someone told you Satan loves you and wants you to have the ritual goat killing at your house tonight? I’d be offended by that too (the Satan thing as well as the Jesus thing).
I’m Buddhist and so I do welcome all forms of positive thought directed my way and so I am happy with people offering me prayers. It’s just another form of good energy I can use. So, yeah it’s cool if Jesus loves me, but I don’t like it when people make assumptions. Would it be fair for me to assume you are racist and walk up to you and tell you an offensive and vulgar joke? We must all respect each other’s beliefs… that is “supposedly” what this country is all about. Supposedly.
PS shouldn’t this question go under religion rather then philosophy?

Jesus told the Apstles in the book of John that the world would hate them because it hates him. Why does the world hate Jesus... because John wrtes that the spirit of Anti Christ was already at work in the world and it is still at work today. Oh, and to the one that said he "didn't want to be a part of our cult", that just shows the realization of the work of the spirit of AntiChrist. Why would words of love create so much negativity? How do you associate love with a cult? Also if you notice, noone seems to get near as upset if you mention Buddha or Mohammad or even God, but mention Jesus and everyone immediately begins to attack.

Because it is a very rude thing to do in a public setting. You are making a blanket assumption that the person is christian or believes in God. That is a very ignorant thing to do. Don't assume that people believe in what you believe and that what you believe is right. Remember, their is NO physical proof that Jesus ever existed. That is a fact. So keep your comment to yourself or within the circle that you worship in. Otherwise, you may end up in a religious conflict like the Mid East is in right now.

Because non-xtians have had Jesus rammed down their throats for their entire lives, and we're tired of it.
Because the people saying it are extraordinarily self-important and self-righteous, and think they have an inside track to salvation that those who believe otherwise don't.
Because the xtians who try hardest to convert others to their beliefs are usually the ones who are most ignorant of other religions (like thinking that buddhists worship Buddah, for example).
Because, while Jesus said "judge not, lest you be judged", and "let the one who is without sin throw the first stone", his followers persist in judging and stoning.
(oh by the way - I guess you didn't really want an answer, just an excuse to spew your own self-important beliefs once again).

This is a spiritual battle and the Holy Spirit in believers, makes the satanic spirit in non believers angry which in turn, as unbelievers already work for Satan, do their fathers work.
It is only when you are filled with the Holy spirit of God that you understand these Scriptural truths, and that takes someone to make a commitment. Most people are "comfortable" in their sins and don't want to admit that they are sinners. Jesus shows up peoples sins making them VERY uncomfortable. So it is not you they are rejecting, It is ultimately Christ.

Because it's hypocrisy based on your own beliefs. I was raised Roman Catholic and got baptised, communion and confirmation. After that my parents left it up to me if I wanted to continue to go to church and I declined. Your beliefs are that anyone who does not believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ are going to hell. So why tell people Jesus loves them, if already they are awaiting hell? If you need a belief system to make it through life on a bunch of stories that didn't make sense years ago, and make sense even less nowadays when we have scientific evidence that refutes it, so be it. But don't go around trying to spread your beliefs onto other people. Try to push them on the priests who have obviously lost their way, when they spent 10-20 years molesting little boys. Does Jesus love them too?

One reason there is too much hate in the world; the generations that followed Jesus and his teaching have not taken up the mission of love he preached. Even Christians have not taken up this mission and hate groups that Jesus would have loved. Just don't tell people anymore that Jesus loves them....tell 'em that YOU love 'em!

Honey,
There are over 214 religions in the world and of that, six that we consider major religions because they have many people that belong to them ... the numbers are not important. There a simply a lot.
Along with all those religions are lots and lots of people who do not subscribe to any of them.
So, when you insist on telling them that someone loves them that they do not subscribe to or do so out of context of the conversation, what you are perceiving as their anger is simply their expression of telling you to butt out or the statement is inappropriate or out of context of your interpersonal interaction with them.
It is not about Jesus ... it is about your use of his name to excuse your behavior and it might also be perceived as an abuse of his name.
Therefore, if you have recognized this response, you might want to ask yourself why you continue to use it when it is not appropriate or directed at persons to whom you suspect it would be unwelcome.
