I haven't shaved my underarms in 5 years. I read in an article that it can cause cancer so I stopped shaving. But people say that I smell, especially when I sweat. It's really embarrassing when I try to wear sleeveless shirts, people stare!! I don't know what to do. Please help me!

I have never heard that shaving causes cancer. You should think about the logic of that statement. What about shaving could cause cancer? cutting hair?
A more likely situation, the use of deodorant after you have shaved may cause a rash. many antiperspirants contain aluminum as the main ingredient. Some people are allergic to the aluminum, sometimes it causes breakouts. The solution to that is to use a natural deodorant. Toms of Maine makes one, all natural. There is also a deodorant stone that you wet and then rub on your armpit made of all natural ingredients.
Sweetie, please don't believe every article you read. Think about what you are reading, before you agree with it, ask yourself if it makes sense. If you don't know, try doing some research on the subject. Don't just follow blindly what some person may have made up just to be published.

im not sure where you heard about getting cancer from shaving more than anything i know that the french believe that the chemicals in the deodorant can cause cancer but never shaving.
you could always trim it and go have it waxed. waxing is a little safter and will last longer because it removes the entire hair folicle instead of just cutting it of at the skin. you could solve the odor problem by using a solid antibacterial soap such as dial or leaver 2000 and you can go to the health food store and purchase natural chemical free deodorant that shouldn't cause cancer.
p.s. you should do what ever makes you comfortable if you like your hairy armpits you should keep em screw what other people think you're the only one that counts when it comes to yourself!

most everything in life can be a possible cause for cancer. your life will be so limited if you let fear of illness stop you from living a full life. Indeed, something else may kill you, but be assured you WILL leave this earth in some way. Find a way to be at peace with that fact, and then you will live not in fear of what may possibly harm you, but enjoy the days you have on this earth to the fullest, and with many friends around you -- for a female with hair under her arms, silly as it may seem, in our society it is considered gross, so go get some Nair, socialize, and be happy!!

Shaving no more causes cancer than brushing your teeth does. And you wouldn't stop that would you?? Shaving does not cause cancer. Wear deodorant and feel free to be bald!!! (at least under your arms)

I've heard that it can cause cancer too, but that doesn't stop me. I can't go 2 days without shaving, it just feels gross. i've also heard theres a link between antiperspirants and cancer, but I'd rather take the chance and smell nice while I'm here. basically theres a link between cancer and most chemical products, but nothings difinitive.

Have you thought about waxing? Most people just aren't used to seeing women with the "natural" look.
