Usually the term "washroom" is used to denote a public, commercial, or industrial personal hygiene facility designed for high throughput, whereas a similar term "bathroom" is used to denote a smaller, often residential facility for lesser throughput (i.e., often for only one person at a time to use). The word, originated in the United States, is the preferred term in Canada; in American usage, "bathroom" or "restroom" are now more common. In Britain, Australia and New Zealand, the terms usually used are "public toilets" and (more informally) "public loos". In the rest of the world (usually Africa, Middle East, and Southeast Asia) the term Comfort room is used. Furthermore many European washroom doors are simply marked "WC", for water closet, which may be confusing for non-Europeans.

Restroom Or Rest Room

Restroom, an American euphemism, which refers to a public toilet. Since we seem to have an aversion to actually stating what's going on in there, where as the French call it the piss room or pissoir. Lav is basin, latrine is a military toilet, lavatorium is Latin for wash basin, yet we have dozen's of names for it except for what is actually going on. I have heard it referred to something that rhymes with hitter which does actually fit and would end this discussion but we also have John, can, loo, throne or throne room, privy, washroom, outhouse, facilities, powder room and we could go on and on.

Bathrooms are for bathing and Water Closets or WC, became the rage with indoor plumbing in Europe back in the day, and are for doing things that required indoor plumbing but not bathing. I myself think this is a more hygienic practice after spending some time in Europe.

I myself wonder if it didn't originate when public women's toilets were required to have a couch to rest upon during that time of the month.
