you have to make sure you plug the dsl/cable modem into the wireless router and then go from there.

Hey, I faced this problem two days back when i set up wifi in my house.
In my case, I had enabled WEP - a security measure. So I assigned a password to get into the network. This password, I had set in the router. (A Buffalo Airstation). And on my comp, when I plugged in the USB Wifi Adapter (Netgear), a window popped up telling me that there were Wireless Devices in Range and it showed me the wirelss router.
Then when I clicked on connect, it asked me for the password (you know, the one I had entered as required by WEP in the router). The first time I entered in wrong. But IT DID NOT TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEING WRONG. It just said connected.... but the internet was not working....
after some thinking, it hit me that I had used a different password. So I disconnected and then connected again, entering the correct password. And again it didn't tell me if it was correct or not. But now the ethernet connection was working.
Good Luck with your case.

First of all make sure that the computers are connected to the right wireless router. If possible try to create a WEP(encypted key) so that no one else can get access to ur router. ALSO IF U DON"T HAVE ANY STATIC IP'S THEN U MOST PROBABLY ACCEES THE INTERNET THROUGH A USER ID AND PASSWORD. IN THIS CASE U CAN ACCESS THE GUI PAGE OF THE ROUTER AND SELECT THE CONNECTION TYPE AS PPPoE AND TYPE IN THE USERID AND PASSWORD. ************(WHEN IT SAYS IT IS CONNECTED...IT MEANS THAT THE COMPUTER IS CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER....BUT U NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ROUTER IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET)**************
HOW TO ACCESS THE GUI PAGE OF THE ROUTER...WELL DEPENDING UPON THE ROUTER...EVERY ROUTER WILL HAVE AN IP ADDRESS. TO FIND THAT IP ADDRESS...GOTO RUN>>TYPE CMD>>>TYPE IPCONFIG>>>MAKE NOTE OF THE DEFAULT GATEWAY. OPEN THE INTERNET EXPLORER AND TYPE IN THE DEFAULT GATEWAY NUMBERS AND PRESS ENTER. MOST OF THE ROUTERS ASK FOR A DEFAULT USER ID AND PASSWORD. TRY TO USE admin FOR EITHER USERID OR PASSWORD. IF IT DOESN"T WORK CALL UP THE ROUTER PEOPLE AND ASK FOR DEFAULT USER ID OR PASSWORD OR CHECK THE MANUAL.
Now if these things are connected properly and if it still says connected then u might be connected but not able to browse. So to confirm that first go to start>>run>>type CMD>>u'll get the command prompt>>>type ping yahoo.com. and press enter. Check what result u get. If u get REQUEST TIMED OUT...Then ur not connected. If ur getting something like REPLY FROM (... ...) that means ur connected but not able to browse. In this case first u'll have to check if there is any firewall on the router or computer. Try to disable it. If ur still not able to go online...its a problem with the browser. u can make use of the following site to help u out: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326155.
NOW IF UR ABLE TO CONNECT AFTER DISABLING THE FIREWALL...THEN IT IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE FIREWALL. CALL UP THE FIREWALL SUPPORT TO CONFIGURE IT.
GOOD LUCK/

Read the manual.
You need to access the setup of your router through your browser most likely.
For your Internet connection, you need to associate your router with your IP address from your provider. You need to renew your IP address so that it will associate with it.
You should also have a name for your SSID.
You may also need to go to your Wireless Setup Wizard in the Control Panel and do some set up there or with Atheros software that may be included on your disk supplied with your router.
I assume that you have a wireless connection on your laptop... a wireless adapter built in or attached.
Good luck. E-mail me if you wish to chat more about this.

Did you set up a "128-bit WEP" (password) for your router? If so, you must have the same "WEP" (password) on your laptop that you have on your "main" computer. Otherwise, the router will block you from gaining access to the Internet. A "WEP" makes your home network inaccessible to others, unless you want it to be a "Wi-Fi", install a "WEP". (Wireless Encryption Protection) is used to privatize your network.

The operating equipment is corrupted - regularly a rogue motive force. attempt commencing in the secure MODE and be conscious if the placement disappears. if so, do a restore lower back to an previously aspect (previously the placement regarded) If that would not artwork, a equipment restore from the bootup reveal ought to correctly be needed (yet your records will be kept).
