Hmm, it could be a number of things, but if it is a disease, it sounds more like flukes, especially if the symptoms are accompanied by a covering of mucus either on the fins or the body, than anything else. However, it may be due to poor tank conditions or stress. Here are some sites with very complete goldfish care that may provide you with the information that you are seeking. Hope your fish makes a speedy recovery.

comets are usually bought by pet stores for like 3 cents each and are carriers for lots of dieases. They will turn pale quickly if they are in improper water. Try changing about 25% of the water once a week. Clean your gravels in the bottom of the tank. Make sure you are only feeding him a little every other day.Check your filter to make sure it isn't dirty. A fish swimming in dirty water is like us swimming in PEE. Also try adding a pinch of aquaruim salt to the water. If he still isn't in good shape medication may be needed.

It might have a fish disease called ick . I am not sure that's how you spell it but that is how it sounds. Fish that have ick are discolored. They look pale and they sometimes have red or white patches on their scales. My pet fish get it sometimes.Maybe that is what your fish has.You can sometimes buy fish medicine in pet shops.I have also heard people taking their fish out of their tanks and brushing iodine on them and immediatly throwing them back in. I have never done that myself though.
