Regarding Duffy: there is often some disparity in early stats, as some things weren't accurately recorded. My copy of the Baseball Encyclopedia (2003 edition) shows him as going 237 for 539 in 1894, or .440 for the season. That is the highest recorded. 2nd was Tip O'Neill, with .435 in 1887.
The best post-1900 averages were Napoleon Lajoie with .426 in 1901 and Rogers Hornsby with .424 in 1924.
