Santa Claus may be fictitious to some, but the Legend of Santa Claus take many forms. I would have to say that Santa Claus was an incarnation of St. Nicholas who was born 271 AD and died about December 6, 343 in the town of Myra in Asia Minor (which is now Turkey). He spent his life helping the poor children and a friend to the poor and helpless people. St. Nicholas is also the Patron Saint of Sailors. After Myra was over thrown the sailors removed his remains and transferred them to the port city of Bari, Italy where a tomb was built over his grave.
In Germany, as well as many other European countries, we celebrate St. Nicholas on December 6th, the children put their shoes in the hall or outside the front door and St. Nicholas leaves candies and chocolate for them. We're lucky in Europe because St. Nicholas's partner 'The Weihnachtsmann' comes December 24th. Hope this answers your question.

Santa's birthday falls on the day that Christ was reborn. Traditionally, it was celebrated by a large gathering of elf-like creatures in public display of affection for Santa. However, due to a high rate of atheists and other people who are going to hell, nobody celebrates it anymore.
