The smithy says he charges $10 per shoe to do the job,in addition to the cost for the new shoes. The farmer says that is too much so the smith offers another deal: I will charge 1cent for the 1st nail, double that for the 2nd nail, double that for thew 3rd, etc. Which deal should the farmer take?

Normally, a farmers draft horse would require 8 nails per shoe.

the answer is so easy - take the 10.00 per shoe cause if you take 1 nail or 1 penny and double it every time up to 32 nails needed the shoes would cost over 4 million dollars . Do the math . Of course if this is a trick question and the smithey is charging him per shoe $10.00 or 8 nails per shoe it would only come out to $1.28 per shoe so he should take that . If the smithy is going all 32 he must of found a sucker - lol . Thank you in advance for the 10 points by the way !!!!!!!!

$10 per shoe is much cheaper. Assuming 4 nails per shoe, the cost for shoeing the horse based on the double-per-nail quote would be: $655.35.

first shoe costs $0.15 (1+2+4+8).

Second shoe costs $2.40 (16+32+64+128)

Third shoe costs $38.40 (256+512+1024+2048)

Fourth shoe coss $614.40 (4096+8192+16384+32768)

Of course, if there are five nails per shoe, the cost would go into the thousands of dollars, so unless the farmer really likes the smithey, and wants to pay for the smithey's son to go to college, he should pay the $40 and be done with it. Or, he could cut off one of the horse's legs and get a $10 discount (probably not worth it, cause then you would have vet bills, and they might charge per stitch).

How many nails? About 4 per shoe? Is he charging for each nail coming out and then each nail going in? How many horses are in his team? How much does a new shoe cost?

Take the $10 per shoe. Doubling the cost of each nail, by the time he gets to the 12th nail, he's already spent $40.95.By the 15th, it's over $330.00.

Depends on the number of nails he will use. I would either get a set price and tell the "smithy" what I was willing to pay. Move on, find someone else to do the job.
