My five month+1week old daughter just said "mom" tonight, just as freakin cute as she could! Later, I caught her whispering"ma-ma-ma-ma-ma.." to herself as she was playing on the floor! It was so funny, but even though she doesn't know what it means does this count as a 'first word'? Is this the age babies start talking like this, and at what age will she know what 'mom' means? When did your children start doing this?

Usually babies will start making one syllable sounds like ma,ma,ma, da,da,da,..........around 6 months of age. For her to say Mom is pretty incredible, she may be an early talker. Our oldest, who is now 18 years old, started talking very early and yes, I do mean, talking full sentences and asking questions by the age of 13-14 months!!! And he hasn't stopped talking since............hahaha!!!!! Enjoy her! She looks like a cutie!!! Best words put together when you first hear them is, "I love you Mom!" Awesome stuff!!!

At that age, babies are trying to find their voices. The sounds of "ma-ma" and "da-da" are the most common as they are the easiest for the baby to say. I won't say at all that this was not your child's first real word, but my kids started talking early and they were about 7 months old. As far as what age she will know what it means...she was born knowing what mom means to her.

My son started saying Ma Ma (and crying Ma Ma when I was out of the room) when he was 5 or 6 months. My daughter started saying Ma Ma at about 6 months. My son is 9 months old and says Ma Ma, Da Da, Na Na (his sister is named Lorna) and El Wo for Elmo. They do learn early.

aww...how cute that your daughter said MOM and ma-ma-ma-ma-ma at such a young age....i think it only counts as a first word, if she says it a lot....it differs for every baby....i said my first word at 8 months and it counted as a first word...it was MUMMUM which is like the chinese or indonesian way to tell babies to eat....and I said it when i wanted to eat.....i think its adorable that your daughter said Mom at 5 months....and her whispers of ma-ma-ma-ma-ma....so cute!!!! she may just have been babbling....but i'm sure it touched you as a mom.....

It's babbling. She is just practicing individual sounds as she learns the sound that are used in English (assuming that's the language she hears) so that she'll be ready to start talking when she's older.

Hun, as exciting as it is, she isn't talking. She is babbling. My daughter did the same at about the same age. She is 6.5 months old, says "yaya" "dada" and "mama" now. They're figuring out their tongues, and mouthes. You will know, the first time she calls for you. I was sad-ish, because she said "dada" as her first babbling phrase, but she doesn't know any better. When she asks for mama the first time, you will know, and probably cry.

Congrats!! And go ahead and write it down in your baby book as her first word spoken was "mama".
Babies do start mimicking at this age. They can easily say "mamama" or "dadadada". I was an early talker (so it says in my baby book) and my son said "dada" when he was around 6 months old.

when my daughter was 4 months old she said "da-da" and when her father and I looked at her in shock, she said it yet again... but after that she didn't do it until about 9 months or so. but i still count it as a first word! :)

I wouldn't categorize it as talking exactly, but she is learning and practicing sounds to get her ready to talk.
