Mexico's infrastructure is nothing like the US'.

In order to understand the plight of the Mexican people one must understand that Mexico's democracy is pretty young. It wasn't until the Fox election that "real" elections actually took place. For a really long time (70 - 100 yrs) Mexico had a one party system where the exiting president basically chose his successor. There were "elections" where the president actually won with 100 % of the vote! The contesting person actually said "you mean, that not even I voted for myself!" Really, it was ridiculous!

Then, what happened was, that oil and other things were found to be very ludicrous for the people in power. What ended up happening was a complete takeover of the oil industry, mining, etc. Everything in Mexico is owned by the Government. except, the people actually never see any of the profits! Amazing isn't it?

So, what the people of Mexico end up with is roads that are badly constructed with poor materials in order to save more money for those that are stealing money from their own people.

It's sad. The people, the few, in power in Mexico have infiltrated every part of government. It's hard to do anything in Mexico without knowing someone. President Fox did many things to help the democratic system along, in fact, these elections are the most democratic they've ever been! However, those in power, (they're still the majority) are always there to impede the way for real change.

No, infrastructure is a function of GDP, population, and land mass. For instance, Switzerland's GDP is tiny compared to ours, but they have many fewer people and a much smaller country. Their roads and railroads are the envy of the world. Mexico has a very small GDP, a large population, and a huge land mass. Do the math.
