Too long a story to do it justice in a few minutes.
Four bedroom house for $150 a month. The wind blew right through the place. The furnace broke down promptly at 5:00 on every Friday night, and we had to wait until the repair place opened at 8 on Monday every week. Spent lots of cold weekends huddled around the oven.
Eventually the place burned down with me in it. In January. By the time I woke up, I could taste the smoke. I could only see my hand if it was less then 6 inches from my face. My bedroom was the only room in the house that wasn't on fire.
I ended up leaving through a window, wearing only pants, in two feet of snow. Lucky for me, somebody saw the smoke pouring out of my bedroom window, and stopped and let me in their car. Otherwise, I would've ended up waiting on the porch where it was warm (a little too warm, but it beat the hell out of standing in the snow with no shoes on.)

a one bedroom, 400 square foot apartment at ground level next to some woods for $775 a month. i had spiders in there all the time so i wanted to move but at the time that's all i could afford. until i got a boyfriend and my neighbor got shot and died in the bathtub for 25 bucks and a tv. then i got the hell out of dodge pretty darn fast.
