In the US most modern graves are behind the tombstone. In general you can walk up the rows between stones, or in front of them and be ok. But for the most part, as long as you are respectful and are just walking through its ok to walk over a grave.

My grandfather always told me that the proper way to walk in a graveyard is to the back of the headstone. That way when you are walking through you are above the headstone and below the feet of each gravesite. I hope that helps. I still walk this way to this day.

well i would think that if your walking thru it at night most people would say very very fast!!
But me i would go slow and linger and read all the stones to see whos there. And say HI to everyone. dead people dont care if you walk on them they are just glad your there to see them.
But im one of those people who see dead people (call me crazy if you want but i know what i see, so i enjoy walking in graveyards you meet some interesting people there if you are just atune enuf.)

Don't they have some sort of headstone? The body is in front of the headstone.

But if you accidentally step on someone they very seldom complain.

I always feel better walking directly behind the headstones of in between the rows of headstones facing toward you.

You are going to step on a grave and you don't worry about it. Dead people don't mind, really they don't. As long as you are not disfiguring the grave area you are ok.

i was always taught that if you walk thru the head stones themselves to get to the one you want....to walk beteween graves....and to stay to the side when placeing flowers etc on the grave....i know that its sorta of hard to tell where the parted is buried....if you can't tell....just do the best you can...it shows respect

It doesn't matter, just don't spit on any graves. Are there any signs saying don't step on the people? No. Don't worry about it.
