I concur. They've voted against raising minimum wages for years and when they did raise them it was by such a little margin. Yet they give themselves raises annually. It's hypocrisy. With 60% of America poor 40% of them living below the poverty level and 10% homeless with jobs it's ignorant to think that raising the minimum wage isn't a good thing. The argument for many of them is that small companies can't afford to give raises to there employees Which is horse Sh|t.

You tell me. If we elect our representatives in congress they work for us. right? So why is it that I can't go to my job and go up to my boss and give myself a raise?

They are the only employees I know of that give themselves raises. I mean c'mon who wouldn't want to give them-self a raise. Go to your job tomorrow and ask around ,"how would you feel about giving yourself and everyone around you a raise with out asking your boss?" I guaranty that you will get a huge response. Then remind them that congress does it all the time.

You wonder where all your tax dollars are going well it's not just Iraq but into Jose the waiter's pocket when Congressmen John Smith decides he wants to go to Spain for a vacation.

I say give'em pay cuts, give us pay raises and we vote on there performance monthly on a TV network. Like American idol only this time we call it. " American AS$HOLE! " and vote the bastard into El Salvador.

Two separate questions:

The answer to the first question varies for different congressmen and Senators.

Some actually believe the country is better off without a minimum wage or at least a lower one. They argue that raising the minimum wage means business will hire fewer entry level people and prevent people from getting jobs , including people entering the work force for the first time, and that on the whole even poor people will be worse off if the minimum wage is raised, because there will be less jobs for them.

I don't believe this but some actually do.

Other reasons are simply to support their party leaders, and to comply with the wishes of lobbyists and big companies and business associations which give them money to get reelected.

The answer to the second question: They give themselves raises because they can get away with it, and prefer to have more money than less.

I do think that it is a very stupid move on the part of Republicans- but the sad part is that there were several Democrats that voted against it as well. Simple truth is that most do not really care for the common man/woman.. and the political lobbies to keep the minimum wage down are very powerful.. Gotta keep big business going full bore.. Interestingly enough, the current minimum wage has been in place for several years- even during the Clinton years..

They vote against the minimum wage because increasing the minimum wage will only increase the prices of goods made by minimum wage workers. Then, the minimum wage earners will be paying more for the things they buy, so its a self defeating effort. (Its like a tax on business, and businesses always pass on their expenses to the consumer)

They vote themselves a pay raise becasue they can - oh, and that includes the DEMOCRAT congressmen too. Sheesh.

Minimum wage is the states job because the cost of living is different from place to place. CA's is 6.75 and no one can afford a house at most levels and rents are massive. In the mid west it is still 5.75 cause everything is cheaper there. think that is fine with me.

Yeah they do give themselves raise every year, and the sad thing is we live in a "democarcy" which means majority rules, and yet there are people with college degrees who can barely rub two nickels together.

Well, they are, TECHNICALLY, pushing the bill to raise the minimum wage - although, they've pretty much doomed it to failure by tacking on the cut to the estate tax.
