I do live in Hawaii, moved here about a year ago. It is VERY different from vacationing here, or from what you might see on TV. For instance, I never surf and hardly ever hula.
I love the ocean, and the lush jungle and gorgeous flowers. Part of the road to my house is a tree tunnel, with 100-foot tall trees arching over the road, with vines and ferns everywhere. Absolutely breathtaking, even after driving it a hundred times.
We don't go to the beach nearly as often as we expected. The bugs are bad--especially mosquitoes and (YUCK) centipedes.
Some locals resent newcomers while others are very friendly.
Prices are much higher than on the mainland (gas is about $3.50 a gallon right now, a loaf of bread runs about $5).
It's hard to find what you need sometimes because all manufactured goods are brought in by ship, and if the boat's late, stuff gets sold out. For instance, Walmart was sold out of EVERY brand of shampoo the other day.

wouldnt ever want to live there... I went twice with parents on vacation but thankfully also went other places so i know enough of the world to say that Hawaii is really no big deal and there are lots of nicer places in the world...

Yes and no!
Yes - the people are wonderful, the scenery's the best the US has to offer, the weather's great, and I love the beach.
No - the public school system is terrible and taxes are outrageous.
