For 200 bucks my friend is willing to sell me his bass guitar and amp (hardly used). ORRRR I could save my money and get a new iPod (my mp3 I have now is really crappy).
What should I do??

Well, the iPOD can probably be found somewhere for less than $200, whereas the Guitar, and Amp is probably not so easy to find for that price.

The iPOD is smaller, making it easier to carry around and store, and easier to have it stolen or lost. You must install music, etc. to make it do anything, but then you can use it most anywhere you want to do your thing... if listening to other people's stuff is your thing. The iPOD is also a technology item, and will become old-fasioned in six months, and obsolete in ten years. Should anything happen to it, you cannot fix it yourself. iPODs come with headphones, many of which have a bad habit of going dead on one side after a few years.

The Bass Guitar and amp are larger, making them harder to carry around, harder to store, harder to steal, and harder to loose. You must know how to play to make it work, and you must practice to sound good... and Bass guitars sound pretty lousy unless you're using them for backup, so they're mainly for making other players in a band sound good... but you might be able to modify the bass guitar to sound more like a regular guitar, by changing strings and stoppers and such, so if you like to sit around and play guitar, this might be the thing for you. Guitars are musical instruments, and very little advancements in the way of guitars have been developed, so ten years from now, it will still work fine (assuming you haven't broken it) and 50 years from now it could become a classic. Guitars and Amps can generally be repaired with a little bit of know how... at least on small things like connectors and strings, and should you find yourself dissatisfied with them, you can sell each separately, giving you a reasonable shot at recovinging your money's worth, and perhaps more.

Before buying an instrument you should always ask yourself: am I actually going to put the time and effort into learning this thing? If not then there is no reason to buy one. Buying an instrument is a big decision. Have you thought about playing the bass before? or are you just thinking about getting it because you friend is going to sell it to you? $200 dollars is a lot of money, and there is no reason to spend it on something you're not going to use. If you are genuinely interested in the bass then I say go for it, but if it's just something that popped into your head simply because your friend is selling his then go for the iPod.

Are you going to seriously PLAY the bass guitar? You can get a good beginners one for around $250. If you're contemplating getting a new ipod, I'd go with that because your ipod will have much more practical use than the bass. Unless of course you are a serious muscian or want to dedicate serious time..

Also I wouldn't go with Ipod. Their software is crappy.. Go with Creative :Labs, Iriver, Iaudio, etc. They have better hardware and software. Creative Labs 5 GB Microphoto is only $130. You will spend more time listening to music than playing it.

It sounds like you want to help your friend out, but don't shoot yourself in the foot because of it. They will sell the guitar regardless. Just make sure you're not stuck with something you don't like or something that will sit in the closet.

No way should you waste your money on some stupid Ipod that's just going to get stolen in a few months anyway. Trust me, buy the bass. With the bass you can actually do something other than regret that 300 dollars you lost on something that will never be returned (personal experience).

Get a used guitar and amp. A guitar is more of a complete instrument. With a guitar you can write songs. I don't want to sound chauvinistic but a guitar is more of a girl instrument than a bass. You can't really play melodies on bass. You can't write songs. Its hard on the fingers.
