I don't know about free SMS using a mobile phone but I know one application that brings free SMS over the internet - http://www.chikka.com. You can use this application to send text messages to mobile phones, even abroad. I used to use chikka when I had a lower mobile plan and was trying to not exceed my monthly limit.

Well, as quick as the nerds in the public figured out ways to get around rules, the nerds working for the phone companys found them all. At the begining, there were ways around. Now, there are not. You can do it over the internet....thats all.
