A rhetorical question is one in which the answer is obvious; the speaker or writer is asking it only to make a point. So a rhetorical question does have an answer.

In Zen Buddhism, a koan is a question that has no answer (e.g. "what is the sound of one hand clapping?") The purpose is to challenge the listeners, to make them think or meditate.
