this would make it easier for me to buy songs via itunes which will download in proprietary format (so it does not work with my sonos etc), then i burn in mp3 format to my hard disk, then rip from my hard disk back into my itunes, thus no longer in protected format (and thus now works with my sonos etc)

I don't think there's such thing as burning or ripping unless a physical CD is involved. What you really want to do is to strip iTunes purchased music of its DRM (which can be done on a Mac with hymn: http://www.hymn-project.org ; visit versiontracker.com to search for equivalent Windows software). All other iTunes music in your library is not restricted and you should be able to copy it over to your alternate player.

good question.. I'm wondering about this myself. Right now I have to do it to the CD first then to the mp3 player... I think it has something to do with the legality of the whole thing. First apple wants you to buy the iPod, not just some mp3 player. second if you burn a CD, then what you do with the CD is really your business and they are absolved of any responsibility of what happens to the mp3 file after that. At least that's what I think, I'm going to keep this on my watch list and see what other ppl say. Thanks for the Q!
