Travelers Checks

I am first surprised that you aren't able to use your debit visa card, since it is essentially a "prepaid" credit card.

Anyway, traveler's checks work well; or switch to a bank that has branches all over the world, where their own products work everywhere. If you are trying to pay someone, you can wire the funds, but you will need to know the bank wire information of the person you are paying.

You can either go to your bank and do a wire transfer into the intended party's account, if you know their account number, or do a wire transfer through Western Union or MoneyGram. Both of the later will require cash from you to wire to your friend. You can also purchase either a cashier's check or traveler's checks or money orders and send them snail mail.

If the money is for you to use while traveling, your best bet is the traveler's checks. American express guarentees that your funds will be reimbursed if they are lost or stolen.

Your debit card VISA will work in ATM machines internationally. You could techincally withdraw money whenever you needed it. The only problem with that is the fees and exhange rates add up if you use the machine frequently to withdraw small amounts.

If you have a trustworthy friend or relative in your destination, you could send the money to their accounts by wire transfer before leaving. Then you could withdraw it there.

Really the best solution is traveller's cheques. You'd be most secure with those.

Your VISA debit card, can be used just like a credit card, with the only difference being, the money comes from your checking account.

I know, I use mine everywhere I go.

Use traveler's checks. I love them because they're easily replaced and you're not liable if you lose them.
