I'm not sure of the research behind it, but I've read in a few articles that laptops are much more energy-efficient, therefore better for the environment. So if you like the earth we live on, go ahead and buy a laptop. Plus, You can take it virtually anywhere, whereas a desktop just sits on your desk.

it all comes down to your needs, if you like big screens, gaming, raw power and bang for your buck, desktop is the way you gotta go.
If you need something portable that you can take with you, that can connect to the net from many places, or that you can take to class, then a laptop is the right decision.
I currently have 2 desktop machines, and one laptop since I am going to need it for college, I spent about the same on my most recent desktop and laptop, lets compare the features:
Desktop athlon x2 4400, 2 gig ram, 320 gig hdd, ati x1900 xt video card, soundblaster xfi platinum, high end aluminum case, 550 watt powersupply, and other assorted bits and parts to make a premium gaming system, built it a few months back for 1800
Laptop Centrino Duo 2400, 1 gig ram 120 gig hdd, geforce 7400 with 128 megs dedicated, 13.3 screen, weighs 4.1 pounds, paid 1750 before tax and extra stuff.
I definately got a great system either way, but for power wise, the desktop would stomp the laptop into the ground, but there is no way I could take my desktop to a college class with me.
When it comes time to upgrade, on the desktop, i can pop it open and pull out any part and replace it with anything I need to. new video card, no problem, new motherboard/cpu, no sweat, more memory cake, more hard drives, cake...
On the laptop, I can add more memory, something in the pcmcia slot, and whatever i can plug into the usb ports, thats it.

I would rather have a desktop, but I travel for a living so laptop works. Laptop keys are too close together (until you get used to them)

It depends on what your needs are:
Desktops are much cheaper, and if your only concern is price then you will get more power and features for a lower price with a desktop
Also you can upgrade easier, and components will be cheaper
with a Desktop
However if space is a concern, or you want to be able to take your computer with you when you travel, go to the libary, go to school or college, go to and from work, etc, then a laptop which you can much more easily travel with is better.
Prices for both keep coming down all the time
It might even make sense to get both, and use one to backup your data on,

Laptop if you surf. Desktop if you use engineering type software or similar. Drawing with Solidworks on my laptop is a strain on the eyes. If you do a lot of typing you may want to consider desk top for good posture and larger keyboard.

I prefer the portability and convenience of my laptop. I can dock it and use it as a regular desktop and unlike a desktop, the locks to deter theft are easier to use.
I take mine to school and watch movies and listen to music while working. My work desktop takes up a lot of space and when IT needs to take it to update something, it is an inconvenience to remove and then hook up again.
