You can check the fault codes by turning the key ON-OFF-ON-OFF -ON, (don't start it) and either counting the blinks of the Check engine light or reading them directly on the electronic odometer. I can't remember which for that year.
55 (five blinks pause five more) is end of codes or P-dONE for the odometer. Check them against the mfg list.
The engine had an AIS (Air Idle Speed) motor that regulates the idle by way of a passage around the throttle body plates. If it is sluggish, it can cause the stalling and hunting idle you speak of. A scan tool will give the desired AIS vs. actual readings. It can diagnose a sluggish unit.

first off i have to ask if you have had any work done to it lately,,because it sounds like it has a vacuum line that has came off,,if not,,check and see when the last time you put a set of plugs in it this will cause one to idle up,,and down,,what is happening the computer is trying to compensate for the rough idle,,this is why it idle,s up on you,,also a oxygen sensor will cause this,,but it will give you a check engine light,,if the check engine light is not coming on when this happens,,it,s probably just the plugs,,or possibly a clogged fuel filter,,there os one other thing you might want to try,,and it don't cost a penny to do,,the next time it does this try loosening the gas cap up on it,,and then re-tighten it,,it may be trying to vapor lock on you,,because of all the heat we have had lately a lot of cars have been doing this,,i think from all i have given you to check,,you will probably find the problem,,i base all my answers on things i have done,,i hope this help,s
