For a 2-3 day get away, I would go with San Diego. In general it's cheaper than LA and even though it's a big city, there is lots to do, but it's not as bad as LA. LA isn't a good palce for a vacation at all. While you are in SD, you can visit Old Town (free), Balboa Park (free), the Zoo (not so free), The Gaslamp Quarter and the Harbor. You can see the the aircraft carrier (forgot the name, I can't believe it) and the HMS Surprise from the Russell Crowe movie Master and Commander. Take walks on the Bay, eat at Miguel's on Coronado, visit the Hotel Del Coronado. For HUGE hamburgers go to Hodad's in Ocean Beach and then visit the "antique" shops while you're there. And don't forget the Pt. Loma Light House and Tide Pools.

Although I am in the San Diego area and I think it is great, I also would recommend Pismo, SLO, Morro Bay. Less crowded, beautiful coastal area north of Santa Barbara. Tour Hearst Castle, go wine tasting, visit Solvang.
