You float relative to the elevator, until the elevator hits the ground. all things being equal, and you can survive in this magic elevator. That is the simple answer not accounting for the rotation of the earth, friction between the elevator and the structure that it is in, air pressure, etc.

What is it with you people and falling elevators, did you start out at 49 miles and now you have counted down to 40? Are we going to have to wait until you ask what we would do if we were in an elevator on the ground?

I would continue to wear my oxygen pressurized suit or space suit until I got to about 15,000 feet to 10,000 feet depending on how much I was enjoying the view. Then I would step out of the elevator and pull my parachute chord and gently flow the rest of the way down.
Of couse I would probably have time to answer a few questions on Yahoo's Answer forum while falling.

How many elevators are up in the atmosphere? There wouldn't be one, so I wouldn't be in one. However, if I had decided to do LSD and was on a particularly bad trip that could happen, so I guess I'd scream and wait it out.
