People like rap for the same reasons people like rock, jazz, country, etc. Either A) they can relate to it, B) it makes them feel good, C) they can dance to it, or D) all of the above.
I do understand why people come up with that kind of conclusion about rap; that's all you see on TV and hear on the radio. But for the most part your opinion is based on only one dimension of the genre (the mostly negative and stereotypical mainstream rap that's force fed to us on a daily basis) instead of the genre as a whole. Not all rap is like what you see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If you're willing to dig a little deeper into the genre, you'll discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than sex, drugs, money and murder. For example:
- A Tribe Called Quest
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Madlib (and his alter-ego, Quasimoto)
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)
Unfortunately, you'll rarely find any of those artists in the mainstream media because good ol' Corporate America has flooded the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance. I suggest you try listening to some older artists (A Tribe Called Quest is a great group to start with) and some underground artists (like some of the artists I named above). You might be surprised.

I'm not a big fan of what's on the radio and MTV now. I am still not a big rap fan, but I do enjoy listening to older artists like NWA, 2pac, Ice Cube, and Public Enemy. The difference is that their music wasn't made for instant radio play--the music is much denser and the lyrics are actually thought through and sound nice. The beats from many rap artists are not just one drum loop with some cheesy synth sounds over it. Their music, to me, are just as musical as any other band's.
Good rappers have a "flow"--their words are rhythmic, emotional, and even melodic at times. Though the lyrical content may be offensive at times, in general they are very humanist and reveal a lot about fighting against adversity. And don't take the lyrics too seriously--there's a lot of exaggeration and hyperbole in them. Sometimes it's even intentionally so for humor and entertainment.
Try listening to older artists. See if you like it--that music is vastly different from what you hear on the radio today.

Please dance music is the same.. rap music has changed a lot form the LL Cool J and Run DMC. Rap music is not repetitive and yes there is a lot of fast life but what is Rock music. Talking about Cherry pie and I am depressed and I will kill you. Columbine .. they used that crazy rock music. Rock music can be a tool for violence. That is not the point, the point is that this music was a way from people in the ghetto to express themselves in true rhyme, similes and alliteration. Or to even allegory, Nas is a rap artist that uplifts and talks about our history besides his bad neighbor. This is also something to rebel with, rap can be a tool to teach and reach.Rap also brought the attention and the money from white people in the Black community. 70% of the white community buys rap and goes to the concerts, ask them why they love it.

what the heck. rap is awesome and so is hip hop..you know i hate people that say negative stuff about rap because its music, and its not like ur saying that but other people diss rap and stuff and its not right. it takes hours hours to develop rap music and tunes. + what about rock? whats the meaning? expressing anger? rap is expressing talent and fun upbeat music and hip hop too.
I SO AGREE WiT PRETTYJP
