Don't just say because they can, I honestly want to know why Sprint AND Verizon phones can only go to a certain point but when my friends text me from cingular they can go on forever.

they only have a 160 character "allowance" w/ cingular u still have a 160 character limit it just allows u like 4 messages so when u go over the 160 its more than one message. sprint just gives you 160 so if u have to send something longer than that u have to start a new message. theres nothing u can do about it.

cingular uses a technology called GPRS (Generalized Packet Radio Service) to send text. This technology is primarily used to send data like for web service or, picture or, video files. The use of GPRS allows for more data to be transferred. There is a 160 character limit but most newer phones are able to automatically convert the text to a picture message and send the message as a entire message, MMS or picture messages have no character limit only a data size limit like 300-1000KB. this is also the way e-mails are delivered to data devices. anything sent as a text message and not a MMS is broken into 160 character segments.

No matter what, a text message is 160 letters. Some phones, and companys, if they decide, can limit the amount of characters total. They don't limit you under 160, but some will limit you to 160 at the most. That would be 1 text message. Others will limit you to 320 (160x2) which will send as 2 text messages. It all depends on what the phone, and/or company allows. But no matter what your friends do, if its over 160 letters, it sends, and charges them, for more then 1 text message.

They must give them a greater character allowance.
