What! Don't listen to that opposite wheel lady there. Whether or not you're going forward or backward, if you want the back of the car to go right, you cut the wheel right. If you want the back of the car to go left, you cut the wheel left. Don't think about it too much or you will confuse yourself. (I had serious problems with the abstractness of the whole idea when I first started maneuvering backwards)
When you're parallel parking,
1) pull up parallel with the car in front of where you want to park.
2) Reverse STRAIGHT until your FRONT wheel is lined up with their BACK WHEEL,
3) cut your STEERING WHEEL to the right. (Pay attention to their rear bumper)
4) Straighten out as you clear their bumper. (Pay attention to the front bumper of the car behind you)
You should be able to back up straight, if not, you should have some room in front of you to straighten out.

I always turn it hard, then cut it hard the other way once you feel you're far enough in. It depends on the car. Once you've dont it once or twice, you can feel when you're supposed to cut the wheel back.
