my opinion is that we should never lie to our kids especially about something as trivial as santa clause... just tell em the truth and be done with it...and then take all the credit for the xmas gifts too!!!

Well, life's not fair.
Actually, my wife and I kind of have a hangup about lying. We always told our kids the presents came from us. Our kids loved Christmas just the same. :) But you'll occasionally catch hell from grandparents, coworkers, and perfect strangers when they find that out.
It was funny because when my son was about 4 or 5 he got in a big argument about us that there WAS a Santa. At that age he loved to argue. He saw the Tim Allen version of The Santa Clause and INSISTED that that's how Santa got around.
By the way....I grew up poor. I don't ever remember being disappointed and heartbroken. I might have been little, but I distinctly remember Christmas being about spending time with family, being at church and celebrating the Christmas story, enjoying the wonder of the season, etc. I think my experience was actually richer as a result.
Today, my kids are 17 and 13. For the last few years we have gotten the kids very little in the way of presents, even though we can afford to. As a family, we make this time about more meaningful things than presents. It takes the stress off of all of us and I think we enjoy it more.

I can see both sides of the debate of whether or not to let kids believe in santa but if a parent is allowing their own kids to believe in santa i think that it should be understood by the child is that santa claus as we envision him now is just a legend but I am not sure where to find this but the tradition of getting presents from a santa claus type figure was started with St. Nicholaus (hope I spelled it right)

No--for that is not the truth and lying is listed in the Bible as one of the seven things God hates.
Proverbs 6:16-19: "These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."
Always tell children the truth. Parents must be a good example. If a person lies in little things, then they will probably lie in much.

I don't think that we should be teaching kids that Santa exists today. Its a lie. Maybe there was a St Nick that DIED. Sry all of you believers of Santa. but if we want to give to the poor cause you know that "Santa" won't give them something because they can't afford it. We can help them and send them gifts.

yes, u should...It's very sad that some parents just can't afford to get their kids alot or anything for christmas....however i think if u can afford to..and want to u shouldn't feel bad about getting "Santa" gifts for ur kids.
I always do the Angel Tree for 2 kids that are the same age as mine each year.

Well that's kind of hard to say because one of the verses in the song here comes Santa Clause goes: He doesn't care if your rich or poor for he loves you just the same.

That is why there are programs like Toys For Tots and Caring & Sharing which take donated toys and give them to needy children for Christmas as though Santa himself brought the gifts.

i think the story of santa is a great way to fuel kids imaginations, and makes christmas one of the best times of the year for a kid. however, if you feel guilt for the rich/poor difference at christmastime, try joinging a volunteer organization that brings toys to poor kids, such as toysfortots, or simply buy some toys and donate them to such an organization.
