Do you want to know a secret? Yahoo buys software and page indexes from Google, slaps ads galore onto the site, adds in 'sponsored links' that look like real results and then claims it is better! Plus Google's software is open-source so anyone can take it and improve/change it for their own use. For example, Websense has made a program that scans the web for executable files, downloads them, and then scans them for viruses all with Google software.

For general searching needs, they are comprable. On more complex searches, Google is often (I can't say always because I haven't tested) more accurate. It is also faster because the general search doesn't have as many worthless bells and whistles so you can get right to what you wanted faster.
Where I feel Google really shine are in some of the special features. My gmail account is a lot cleaner than my yahoo account (I have had the yahoo account for about a decade longer, but none the less). Google Maps (and I assume Google Earth) far out shine any other mapping search on the web.
Yahoo has some features I like that Google doesn't offer though. Launchcast and Yahoo Games are two that come to mind.
But, like I said, for general search, you won't notice a difference and it is just up to personal preference.

I have used Google for years. Way before it was "hip" to use google. Google has a great interface, it does a "search" without any distractions. When I am doing work related research, I just want to focus on that. No ads and simple. It doesn't give you as many spam sites...

Google search methodology better than others. It has kept so many information that no other serach engine has kept. Ask Google, it will shed you light.

The interface is so much nicer--it's cleaner, much less cluttered, more logically laid out. Plus there is a ton of peer pressure to use it.
