To stop counterfeiters for one. The other is to help the dollar more valuable. People start collecting the new dollars, or old dollars. This takes it out of circulation. The gov't knows how much money they have produced. But there will be less because of collectors, therefore making the dollar worth more. Same thing with the state quarters, and the four different nickels...

The design changes are in response to super counterfeiters, like North Korea, who could make almost perfect copies of the old bills.

Has something to do with counterfeiting. The US treasury does not want anyone trying to counterfeit their designs, and besides, the new $20 bill looks way cooler than the older version.

Counterfeiting is one reason, the other is our aging population. Some of the changes have been made to help those who don't see well. There are larger faces so they look more different, easier to read numerals on the corners, as well as the different colors.

Two reasons:

1. because they are constantly trying to make it more difficult to conterfeit currency...and because they can actually pull the old bills out of rotation means that the new more forge-proof can make up the majority of the money supply.

2. Because it actually adds more value to the dollar--it makes it more shiny and new and seem like it is worth more...it creates a psychological barrier to inflation.
