What has been told to you is true. However how fast the cervix thins and opens varies from woman to woman. In some women, the cervix may efface and dilate slowly over a period of weeks. A first-time mother often will not dilate until active labor begins.
Dilatation and effacement during active labor is generally faster for those who had previous vaginal deliveries ( not unless there are some complications). That explains why a woman experiencing her first baby had a labor which usually lasts for about 12-14 hours while if she had delivered a baby in the past, labor is generally quicker, lasting about 6-8 hours. These averages are only approximate, and there is considerable variation from one woman to the next, and from one labor to the next.

It all depends. My first son came out quick, no hard labor, it was a little easier than what I expected. And with my second i thought it would be even easier because everyone told me the first one's always the hardest....and they were wrong! I was in labor for 36 hours, induced twice until they finally gave me a c-section. and with my third son i went into labor pretty quickly after they induced me when my water broke and was able to have a successful VBAC. So, it all depends. I know that's not the answer you wanted, we all want specific answers duing this time...but time will take its course...good luck and congrats!!

The majority of the time, the 1st birth takes the longest, but it doesn't necessarily keep getting faster (i.e. the 3rd birth is not necessarily faster than the 2nd birth).

yes it does, and according to what i was told, it does so b/c of the fact that your body is already used to having a baby, but like you said every pregnancy is different. They also say every pregnancy is suppose to be easier in labor. I had my 3rd one 10 months ago and she was the worst labor but shortest time.

My second went much faster than the first, 8 hours of labor instead of the 13 I had with the first one. However, she did not come any closer to her due date than my first, both of them had to be induced. I guess it all depends on what the baby wants to do...

I heard it was that way too, I have two children now and I was in labor for 7 hours with both boys. They are 2 years and 1 week and 44 minutes apart.

Usually it does go faster! Of course, not for everyone, but on average, you will labor less time with your 2nd child than your 1st, etc.

Hey man, every pregnancy is different, there is a lot in books and on the web, but you just have to compare this pregnancy with this pregnancy and no other.
