The Station Agent - Australian movie I think. It's one of those films that you'll have to watch more than once to really appreciate it.
Also Smoke Signals, Simon Birch, The Big Lebowski, Miller's Crossing and Billy Bathgate.

Well I have 2 that I LOVE that not many have heard of... The first is called Shirley Valentine (about overcomming a midlife crisis..lol) and Legend (with a VERY young Tom Cruise). A 'fantasy' movie about a young man who falls inlove with a princess of course! Loved both of them ( I think a little too much... tee hee hee)

It is a foreign movie named Children of Heaven. It is directed by Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi. You can rent it in Blockbuster or buy it at Amazon.
It is about eight-year-old Ali and his younger sister Zahra. They are accustomed to taking care of the many daily responsibilities in their family. When Ali loses his sister's newly repaired pink shoes, its disastrous because she has no other pair. Ali begs Zahra to keep quiet until he can recover them. They have to share a torn pair of sneakers to go to school. When the shoes eventually turn up, they are on the feet of another little girl who probably needs them just as much as Zahra. Finally, Ali rests his hopes on a citywide footrace for third and fourth-graders where the third prize is a pair of shoes.
Winner:

Americas Award,
