I'm replacing a pull chain fixture. I have all the stuff (surface mount boxex, contuit, wires, switches, outlet, new fixture. I need to know how to wire it. The power is coming into the light now. How do I put it out to the outlet (separate) on one side and to the switch to control the light on the other (I don't want the outlet switched).

The key is to identify the "hot" wire that you have at your existing pull chain fixture. "hot" is always black. You will need to run a black wire from this wire to your outlet, connecting it to the side with the smaller of the two prong holes. You will need to run another hot wire to the switch. If you are using conduit then run another black wire back from the switch to the new light fixture. If you are using Romex then you will need to use the white wire to serve as a black wire to return power to the light fixture from the switch. Attach this white wire to the black wire of your light fixture. All other white wires need to be tied together. The white wire going to your outlet needs to be connected to the side with the larger prong hole of the outlet. Tie all the bare groung wires together into one big bundle, and wire any green screws that may be present to this bundle as well. I hope this is clear enough.

Make certain the power is turned off to the light. You are starting with a black and a white wire in the ceiling. Connect the black to the receptacle and the black going to the switch to the black in the ceiling. Connect the white in the ceiling to the white for the receptacle and a 10" (starting length) wire jumper for the light fixture which also gets connected to the silver screw in the light fixture. The white wire coming from the switch gets connected to the brass screw of the light fixture. Twist or connect all of the ground wires together and connect a jumper to the light fixture's ground screw (green screw) if it has one and fasten one to the electrical box if it is metal or not if it is plastic. Also make sure that you continue the grounding to the switch and box and the receptacle and box.

wire all whites to white except for the white that comes from the switch.Wire all blacks together and then wire the white from the switch to the black at the light. You will use a single pole switch. Use 2 wire with ground or not preferably at least 14 gage for the switch. White should be power out for light. (essentially all you are doing is breaking power wire at the switch.) The Internet has diagrams that are easy to find.

Given you have purchased all the materials to do the job you must be serious. Go back to where ever you bought the supplies from, or go to one of the big of the big box stores, Home Depot, Lowes, maybe even Wal Mart hardware area, and pick up a book on basic home wiring. Use it a reference manual for this project and after you are done, file it in your DIY library. Seriously.

I have a couple of these little basic wiring books and they have saved my tail several times. Mine were less than a dollar each and have about twenty pages in each book.

In general black goes to black, white to white and grounds get connected together BUT, what you are doing has many other considerations. Buy the book.

Call a professional or someone who has done electrical work before. Electricity is not something to play with
