The secret is to go with friends and stay with friends while you are there. These days with drugs being slipped into your drink when not paying attention are different than the good ole days. Another rule of thumb should be to go to clubs that you know are reputable, no stuff goin on in the back rooms. Crossing the road can also get you killed so don't give in to that theory or you will never leave your room. Party but don't get falling down drunk either, always have one person who goes light on the drinks for the sake of the group.

Families can encourage children to have fun at home. That does not include alcohol or drugs.

Communities need to provide wholesome activites.

That girl was 18 and not legal to drink in NYC. Why was she there with a car? Clubbing in the city should not be a rite of passage.

As a parent, I think we need to show them movies like Traffic and news articles. they think they are invinsible and need to have self respect and know limits. I was almost raped at a bar while out with five gentlemen friends who saw nothing. Thank goodness I had the sense to get out of the situation. They need to be taught young about these things in a way that make them real and scary. Look at the girl in Aruba. Was that fun in the end?

The problem with your question is that it presupposes that women are to blame for violence against them. While I share your sentiment that women should be taught how to protect themselves from predators, I disagree with your assumption that women who go to clubs & drink run the risk of getting killed. That's blaming the victim, and that's unacceptable. Help women with sensible guidelines, but never ever hold them responsible for others' violent behavior. That's just wrong. Going to clubs and drinking doesn't get women killed - killers are responsible for that!

Very little, I think. Until one of their own friends is hurt or killed, it seems very unreal. I'm at that age, so I see how it can always seem like someone else. A lot of issues, like AIDS, pregnancy, etc., are like that. It doesn't hit home when it happens to someone you never knew. So my suggestion? Find a way to make it real. To me and others.

lock them in the tower. it's the only place poor fragile women will truly be safe from all the terrible evil things to fear, like chainsaw murderers and terrorists and meteors and penises. so yeah, lock em in and make them wear veils so bad people will be less tempted to defile them.
