At that age both my daughters loved:
Baby Einstien DVDs
Blocks
Bubbles
Baby Dolls
Pushing things like the plastic grocery carts or baby doll strollers
Coloring stuff (I recommend the color wonder markers or washable crayons)
Board Books
Stuffed Animals
Anything they can stand up on
Mom and Dad usually like clothes for the kids since they grow so fast
Balloons (get the mylar ones from the store, my girls loved those)
Wooden Puzzles
Just a few ideas....Hope it helps

For her\his parents:
A very personal and unique gift can be an oil painting from her\his photo.
Try: www.paintyourlife.com
You can choose a photo and order it yourself, or simply buy a gift certificate.
Good luck!

Whatever you give her she's going to love and love you too for giving it to her but make sure it's really huggable too.
Little ones just like to hug their toys and when you give a one year old a stuffed toy then you have made a friend for life too.

Don't sweat it too much... She won't remember it. Keep it simple... No need for overstimulation... I'd suggest a mobile w/a music box w/a lullabye melody hung over the crib...

there are many websites that split up gifts by age. anything you find there should be appropriate. Amazon is a good site.
