Though I haven't watched much rugby in my life, I would have to say that the rugby player would win. For one thing, they're more used to fighting other people while wearing shoes, not skates. Also, when hockey players fight, they tend to leave their helmets on and punch at those, for some reason. Hockey players' pads appear much thicker, too, so it seems that the rugby players would have more experience fighting with somewhat less padding. The additional padding of hockey players would also lead to them being a little less calloused, so the rugby players could probably withstand a bit more punishment before being knocked out for the count.

The hockey player uses a hockey stick and wears pads with a helmet. The rugby dude wins. He wears no pads, is accustomed to regular bashing during play, goes hand to hand many times injuring the hands during play. Hockey players are weak and could not hang with the rugby dude.

Hockey players are tougher, hands down. They are more agile than football players. So, given those two facts, I'd say the hockey player wins.

Let's put it this way, I was an enforcer in Hockey and if I met someone like Canada's Prop Ron Snow in an alley I would shake his hand and call him friend.
