Actually, there is a correct answer to this. The creator, Peyo, explained that in a cartoon. Smurfs can also live in space. Since there is little oxygen in space, Smurfs are not Blue. Smurfs turn Orange with Black Hair... oh, and they don't call themselves Smurfs. This race of Smurfs in space is called Swoofs. He showed this in an episode from the 80's cartoon called "The Astrosmurf".
In short...
Smurfs can live without oxygen...
