Pres Chimp was refering to the book by George Orwell named "1984". In it, Orwell predicted a society where every person was constantly supervised and regulated by the government.

Just for historical perspective, Orwell was a British citizen and wrote the book in 1948. He picked 1984 as the year by reversing the last two digits and thought this was a far enough away time frame that it was a distant future. There are many people who are now saying he was correct, just his time estiamtes were slightly off.

I would assume that Pres. Chimp's point was that the ID card is just another step closer to the society predicted by Orwell. I fully agree with this sentiment.

How would that take away your freedom? If anything it would be an effective way for the government to distinguish between citizens and illegals, making things more efficient and reducing mistakes.
