Average weight for a boy who is 6 weeks old is 9 lb. 14 oz. to 11 lb. 14 oz. So he's big for his age. This is based on the newest and most accurate growth charts (see sources section below). They are the first ones ever to be based on babies who are known to have been well-nourished; earlier charts are based on large populations of babies with an unknown nutritional status--at a time when overfeeding was considered to be a good thing.

My son is 6 weeks old and we had him at the doctor the other day and he was 12 pounds 1 ounce. Doctor said he was gaining weight great. He was 8 lbs 9 ounces at birth, so he has gained quite a bit, just finished a growth spurt. He is breastfed btw. Anyway, if my son is not considered overweight, don't worry about yours at 10 pounds! Congrats on your healthy little man!

A child's growth and development may be divided into four periods: infancy, the preschool years, the middle childhood years, and adolescence. Immediately after birth, an infant normally loses approximately 5% to 10% of his or her birth weight. However, by about 2 weeks of age, an infant should start to have rapid weight gain and growth.
By 4 to 6 months of age, an infant's weight should be double the birth weight. During the second half of the first year of life, growth is not as rapid. Between the ages of 1 and 2, a toddler will gain only about 5 pounds. Weight gain will remain at about 5 pounds per year between the ages of 2 and 5.
Between the ages of 2 and 10 years, a child will continue to grow at a steady pace. A final growth spurt begins with the onset of puberty, sometime between the ages of 9 and 15.
Nutrient needs correspond with these changes in rates of growth, meaning an infant needs more calories in relation to size than a preschooler or school-age child needs. Nutrient needs increase again as a child approaches adolescence.
Generally, a healthy child will follow an individual growth curve despite variations in nutrient intake. Parents and care givers should provide a diet appropriate for each child's age, and should offer a wide variety of foods to ensure adequate nutrition.

my son was full term...well, actually about a week late, and he was about 8.5lbs at 6 weeks...12 seems like it might be a bit high, but it depends a lot on his weight too
You might want to try going to babycenter.com or doing a search for another website that has a height/weight calculator...it'll give you a rough idea of how your child measures up, so to speak, to other babies his age

I just checked this web site for percentiles and that puts your son in the 75th to 90th percentile, which is great! It is tough to compare infants, because of the height, birthweight, overall size differences that each baby has. My child was only 8 and 1/2 pounds at 6 weeks, but was only born at 6 pounds. Your son sounds fine-if in the future you would like to check his percentiles, try the website below:

my 3 week old is 10 pounds, and that is normal for her. it all depends on the child, don't let anyone tell you your baby needs to be a certain weight, if hes not malnourished, i would not worry about it.
