Rafael Benitez today insisted Liverpool must not be made to travel to Israel to play their Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa.
The Reds' manager is appalled at the prospect of the club's staff, players and fans travelling for a game in Israel at a time when the country is involved in military action.

"It's a crazy situation and totally unacceptable to even think about us going over there at this time," Benitez told reporters.

I have to say I totally I agree with him on this and was wondering what other fans thoughts are on this !?

Absolutely. Particularly Liverpool, who already had a group of fans die in a stadium.

Although it is sort of unfair for the Israeli team to lose a home game because of something that is out of their control. I think both games of the tie should be played on neutral grounds.

Naturally Maccabi Haifa want to play in Israel, but it is obviously out of the question. I suspect that the only reason the venue has not been changed yet is that UEFA have not had time to meet. Also, there will be a certain amount of negotiating to do to find a suitable country and stadium.

Apart from anything else, it has been pointed out in the papers that Liverpool would never get insurance to fly their players into Israel at anything less than prohibitive premiums. Perhaps not the most laudable consideration, but money talks.

This sort of situation has happened before and the game has been played in a neutral country. I cant see UEFA putting them at risk. Remember Rangers had to play the away game with Shelbourne in Liverpool.

This match must be played at a neutral site. Now if they purchased the kiddie Renaldo they could send him out on the pitch before the match to check for land mines. If he found one, would he have time to wink?

Well, since Arthur Balfour promised the land to Jews settlers, it is appropriately fitting for them now to host the most decorated British club in the European League.

I thin bulladawudz's idea is a good one, both matches on neutral ground then Liverpool don't gain an advantage.
