I just saw a similar question asked that had several answers submitted already. I answered this other person relating how I was in the process of re-finishing an old claw foot tub. I purchased a kit and in the instructions it said to wash the tub three times with TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) before using 0000 steel wool to the old finish. That's where I am at.
Others suggested CLR and Lime Away etc. Do a search for the other question and see what was suggested there. One thing I had not heard of was to use dish washer detergent. I am trying that now.
Good luck, and going crazy will probably not help as much as a lot of elbow grease.

There is a product called OXY CLEAN. You have probably seen it on an infomercial. Sam's club sells it. It will clean many stains off of almost anything and there is no fumes and no chemicals to burn your skin. Just wet the tub slightly and pour it on full strength. Let it sit for a little bit and scrub with a nylon type brush and it should come right out. It also works well on laundry stains.

What kind of stains?? ok this may sound weird but it's true. it actually worked for me. I sell Bath & Body products from Country Bunny. One day I was in the shower and saw there was some mold on the window sill. Well I couldn't take my shower in peace knowing that so I grabbed some of the salt scrub and put some on there just to sit on top of it. Well about an hour later I rinsed it off and it was completely gone. That same spot hasn't had mold on it since!! so not sure if it was the salt or what? Funny but true story!!

That depends on what kind of stains.
An ammonia based product may do the job.
Caution! do not mix any ammonia based product with any other cleaner, as it possible to generate a poison gas when mixed with some cleaners.
Used by itself with good ventilation it is perfectly safe to use.

Scrubbing bubbles in the metal can works very well for me, you just let the foam sit about 10 min and use a sponge or brush while rinsing and it usually comes clean very easily even in the grout.
