im looking for information on how to identify bees. one landed on me that i've never seen before. it was about 2 to 3 inches long, bright yellow with black stripes, very shiny. it sorta looked fake, like it was made of plastic. i live in eastern WA if that helps.

Any chance it was a yellow jacket? See this pic: http://www.insectslimited.com/YELLOWJACKET%20thumb.jpg

Doesn't sound like a bee! Look up hornets on the Internet, because it was more likely to have been one of those.

Might have been a Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee (megachile rotundata).
They are quite harmless unless squeezed and are bred to pollinate alfalfa.

You can see a picture of one [first picture] at: http://whatsthatbug.com/bees.html
