See if you can dig up a copy of Fairbairn's book on shogi. Might be available on eBay, or through Amazon. It's the only work in English I know of that is written for a grown-up. (I've seen a few introductory pamphlets--they don't offer much in the way of tactical advice, nor do they address the strategic problem of 'reserves management,' but to play shogi reasonably well, you'll need an understanding of both elementary tactics and that strategic element, use of reserves.)

If you're REALLY serious about learning to play, you're gonna have to learn to read Japanese.

I don't play the game, but I did study it for a while. As shogi lies roughly midway between 'tactical' and 'strategic' games, I had to examine it fairly carefully in order to park it with one group or the other. (I finally parked it with the 'strategic' games, but just barely). This is my disclaimer: I wouldn't want you to take my opinion as capital-T Truth.
