There seems to be a lot of confusion about this, both on Yahoo! Answers and in the world at large!
A "neocon" is a neoconservative.
When a person is called "a conservative," this means two things.
1) They are economically liberal (permissive)
This means they believe business should be more or less free to do whatever it wants.
2) They are socially conservative (not permissive)
They believe laws should govern peoples' private lives and normal day to day behavior.
Historically in the United States, _Conservatives_ have believed in a smaller federal government with low taxes and low spending on social programs. Conservatives ALSO tend to be associated with the following: aggressive foreign policy, high military spending, patriotism and protestant Christianity (often linking the two), outlawing abortion, opposing gay rights, etc.
_Neoconservatives_ have popped up mostly in the past 40 year or so. Some strong "neocons" have included Regan and both Bushes. They agree with conservatives on recent points (the pro-war attitude, patriotism, Christianity, anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage), but differ on the main historical point. They are _more liberal_ than traditional conservatives when it comes to government spending. They are less concerned with shrinking the size of the government, and more willing to spend money on social programs.
The word "neocon" is mostly used as an insult or attack. Some people have genuine concerns and criticisms of modern neoconservatism. They say that "neocons" are more interested in enriching themselves and forcing protestant Christianity on others than the well-being of the country. Most people who use the word, however, don't seem to have the slightest clue what it means.
There are also "neoliberals" and "neolibertarians." You can look 'em on on Wikipedia if you're interested.
So there ya go.

Neocons were former socialists who did not want to go the communist route. The term neocon is grossly misunderstood nowadays. For example, everyone calls Bush and his administration neocons....but none of them fit the bill, most have always been conservatives.
A neocon is someone likely to have been a liberal that has become more conservative.

Hmmm...I just tried to google it and really didn't get a straight answer on the F it actually is.
I did go to a website and it showed Cheney and Bush some brief description of the Neo-conservative but it really didn't make sense.
Sort of like anything that Bush does....doesn't make sense....so my definition of Neo-conservative is any illogical political decision preferably made by Bush and his administrative team.
